Maud Hart Lovelace's Deep Valley A Review by Barbara Hartwick For those of you who love the literary works of Maud Hart Lovelace there is a special treat in store for you. Recently Maud Hart Lovelace's Deep Valley was published by Minnesota Heritage Publishing in Mankato. Written by Julie A. Schrader, this book is a treasure trove of information about the people and places from which Maud drew inspiration for her Betsy-Tacy books. Filled with black-and-white photos from the turn of the 20th century, the book is sure to fascinate the history buff. From the hairstyles and clothes that Maud's friends and acquaintances wore, to the architecture and street settings that Maud passed by as she was growing up, one can imagine what Mankato offered to those who lived "way back when." Almost every description of a person or place includes applicable quotes from Maud's books, as well as historical narratives by Julie Schrader. The reader will most likely discover previously unknown tidbits about the people and places that touched Maud's life while she lived in Mankato.
